Beneath the surface

The reticent girl sitting in the corner may just be the most brilliant person you will ever meet.

The woman who first smiles at you is not your best friend, but may turn against you.  But the one who seemed reclusive at first may just be the warmest and kindest person you will meet.

Your harshest critic may be that person who will go to bat for you one day and protect you against the storms.

That guy who never showed up in class in high school may turn out to be a savvy entrepreneur because he is a non-conformist whose creativity does not sit well with a standard education system.

That artist selling his paintings on a street corner may have real lessons to offer on the deepest human struggles. His art speaks volumes about his beautiful soul.

Nothing is what it seems. If there is one important lesson I have learned about life, it is to never make assumptions about anyone because you may end up disappointed. Disappointed because  he or she may shatter your whole world view about what categories we are all supposed to fit in.  Get to know everyone around you today. Like a kid curious about the world. Embrace those around you.  You may find your life just a little bit easier if you free yourself from the the traps of prejudice, assumptions and stereotypes. Who knows, may be that oddball from high school may turn out to be the one who saves your life.
